AREAS OF INTEREST:
Early detection and treatment of eye problems is the best way to keep your vision healthy throughout your life.
Cataract: A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens.
The treatment is with Phacoemulsification, SICS (small incision cataract surgery) or ECCE (Extracapsular cataract extraction) with Intraocular lens implantation, normally done under local or topical anesthesia.
Refractive Errors: Treated by glasses, contact lenses and refractive surgery of which LASIK is an amazing technology in which a laser is used to improve vision by reshaping the eye’s cornea using a type of blade apparatus called a microkeratome, or femtosecond laser (Intralase/ bladeless LASIK)).
Diabetes and the Eye: Diabetes can damage the retina by causing retinopathy both Proliferative and Non proliferative. It can also cause further damage by bleeding inside the eye causing Vitreous haemorrhage, Tractional retinal detachment and Neovascular glaucoma
Various options exist for its treatment: Argon laser, Intravitreal anti VEGF (e.g. Avastin), Intravitreal steroids and Vitrectomy.
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the Optic nerve. Antiglaucoma medications may be used to reduce the pressure inside the eye, Argon laser may be used as in Argonlaser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) and Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). Surgeries eg glaucoma filtering surgeries or drainage devices may also be used to control the increased pressure inside the eye.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): AMD is a disease associated with ageing that gradually destroys sharp, central vision.
The treatment is by Argon laser, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and Intravitreal anti VEGF injections. Low vision aids and vitamin supplements are also used.
Keratoconus; This is disorder of the cornea which causes its thinning which results in corneal distortion and reduced vision.
In most cases the treatment is by glasses and contact lenses. In severe cases corneal transplants may be required. Intra stromal corneal ring segments (ICRS/ Intacs) and Collagen cross-linking (CXL) are other options available.
Eye infections: Infections in the eye are commonly caused by bacterial, viruses and fungi (or protozoa: acanthamoeba). They may cause pain, redness, itching, swelling and discharge. Treatment depends on the cause of the infection and may commonly include antibiotics: drops and ointments.
